OpenAssets Moves SEC-Registered Transfer Agent Functions Onchain
OpenAssets is putting equity transfer agent infrastructure on blockchain via its SEC-registered OpenAgent unit, targeting global issuers.
OpenAssets has launched an onchain infrastructure solution for global equities through OpenAgent, its SEC-registered transfer agent subsidiary, as federal regulators consider their first major overhaul of transfer agent rules in decades.
OpenAgent records positions and transfers directly on a blockchain while keeping sensitive investor data within private systems, a hybrid approach designed to give issuers real-time visibility into their share registers without exposing personal information to public ledgers.

The move comes as the Securities and Exchange Commission weighs a significant rewrite of its transfer agent regulatory framework, a timing that positions OpenAssets to align its product architecture with anticipated rule changes rather than retrofit later. Issuers using the platform can monitor register changes as they occur, a capability that legacy paper-based and siloed database systems have historically been unable to provide.
By combining the legal standing of an SEC-registered transfer agent with distributed ledger technology, OpenAssets is attempting to bridge traditional securities compliance requirements and the operational efficiencies associated with tokenized or onchain equity markets. The company is based in Pittsburgh and announced the development through a press release dated October 29, 2026.
